Review: ‘Minions’ Blu-Ray & DVD release

Minions DVD coverNow out on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK, Minions, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s animated prequel to Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, is inventive, clever, and funnier than either of the previous two films.

Beginning at the dawn of time, it shows the Minions evolving from single-celled yellow organisms, following them swiftly through ages, as they constantly search for the world’s most despicable masters. Time and again they manage to accidentally eliminate their masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—and when an explosive mistake finally leaves them without an evil leader, the Minions fall into a deep depression. But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and cute little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for all of them to follow.

The trio embark on a journey from Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in ‘mod’ London. Once they’ve tracked down their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain, misunderstandings and misadventures ensue. When Bob accidentally becomes King, Scarlet is less than pleased (while the Queen repairs to the local pub to console herself with a pint). With the rest of the Minions hurrying to London to serve their new boss, Kevin, Stuart and Bob have to face their biggest challenge yet: saving all of Minionkind… from annihilation.

Sandra Bullock heads up an all-star voice cast including Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, Jennifer Saunders (an “Absolutely Fabulous,” turn as HM the Queen), and Geoffrey Rush. The inimitable voices of the Minions are again voiced by Pierre Coffin (Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2) who co-directs with Kyle Balda.

The animation is a joy, and there’s much to admire in the accuracy of the background detail. A view through the doors of Westminster Abbey shows the right curve of the street, statues and monuments are (with the exception of the sword in the stone!) right where they should be.

It’s a fun ride, and both the Blu-ray & DVD also come with three all-new mini-movies, while the Blu-Ray has additional “behind-the-goggles” features including interviews with the writer, producer, and actors.

Minions comes to the USA December 8th.
