Yuko Mizutani, 51, passed away May 17, 2016.
Yuko Mizutani, 51, passed away from breast cancer, May 17, 2016. She is best known as her role of Sakiko Sakura in Chibi Maruko-chan. She still has two episodes that will air on May 22 and 29 that she recorded before her death. Chibi Maruko-chan’s official site posted today, “[Mizutani] has voiced the elder sister (Sakiko Sakura) in Chibi Maruko-chan since the show’s first broadcast in 1990, and she certainly brought life to the show. We mourn her loss.”
Her career began in 1985 in the anime, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, voicing Sarah Zabiarov. This lead to her lending her voice to role in anime, movies, and video games. She had a very busy 30 year career voicing characters in numerous projects from Yu-Gi-Oh!, Digimon Adventures, Tenchi Muyo!, Black Jack, InuYasha, and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal. She has also voiced characters in video games such as Minnie in the Japanese version of Kingdom of Hearts, and Iris in Mega Man X4. She also was very busy dubbing various American films and TV shows into Japanese, voicing for such characters as Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hathor in Stargate: SG-1, Tina Gray in A Nightmare on Elm Street, and many more.
Mizutani was married to director Mizuho Nishikubo.
Our hearts go out to Mizutani’s husband, family, and friends. She slayed many monsters in her career, but the monster of cancer was one monster she could not slay.
