RIP: Sir John Hurt – War Doctor, Alien, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Merlin

John Hurt passed away January 27, 2017.

Sir John Hurt, 77, passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Hurt is best remembered for his roles of the War Doctor in Doctor Who episode Day of the Doctor, the ill-fated Kane in Ridley Scott’s Alien, Mr. Ollivander in the Harry Potter films, and as the gentle soul trapped in a monstrously deformed body, John Merrick, in David Lynch’s The Elephant Man.  Hurt also leant his voice to countless animated features and series and documentaries.

Hurt’s career began with the film The Wild and Willing and his first leading role was in the film A Man for All Seasons. He won a Golden Globe and BAFTA and was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Midnight Express as a heroin addict in a Turkish Prison. This lead to many more roles through the 1970s and 1980s. He stared in Ridley Scott’s Alien as Kane, the first victim to the “facehuggers”. He also stared in a parody of this role for Mel Brookes in Spaceballs. He then gave an Academy Award nominated and  BAFTA award winning performance for his turn at John Merrick in David Lynch’s The Elephant Man. He let his voice to Aragorn in the Ralph Bakshi’s animated version of The Lord of the Rings and Return of the King. In 1984, he stared as Winston Smith in a film adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984. He also let his voice to the Horned King in Disney’s The Black Caldron. In 2001, he brought to life wand maker, Mr. Ollivander, for the first Harry Potter film, a role he would reprise for the last two in the film series. He played Professor Trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm in the Hellboy films and let his voice to the Hellboy television film Hellboy: Blood and Iron. He played the villainous Adam Sutler in the film V For Vendetta. He appeared as Dr. Harold Oxley in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He turned to the small screen to voice the Great Dragon Kilgharrah to the young man who would grow to be the great wizard Merlin in the BBC television series of the same name. He also appeared in Bong Joon Ho’s dystopian horror film, Snowpiercer.

In 2013, he appeared in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode as a hidden incarnation of the Doctor, never spoken of by his current regenerations of modern Who, the War Doctor. A role he went on to play four more times for Big Finish’s audio dramas, the last due to come out next month.

Hurt still has several films that have either just came out or are due to come out this year: Jackie, Darkest Hour, That Good Night, and My Name is Lenny.

Our hearts go out to his family and friends. John Hurt has always been a favorite of our Geek Girls be it his dragon from Merlin, Kane from Alien, War Doctor on Doctor Who, or any of the many, many other amazing roles he played through is very busy career. He will always be one of our favorites. Despite the many strange, terrible, and wonderful roles, you were never a monster, you were always a beautiful human being.
