After a few years in development, Squee! The Fan Documentary Project Web Series‘s first episode “Identifying As A Fangirl” is out on YouTube and ready to be viewed by fans across the world.

Hansi Oppenheimer, the writer, director, and producer of the documentary project webseries gives some background information about the project on the project’s Facebook page:

While researching a topic for a new film project in 2012, I discovered fanfic, which led me to conducting and filming a series of interviews with fanfic writers & readers. The project quickly took on a life of its own and became an exploration of women, transmedia storytelling, and fandom.

As a fangirl myself, I wanted to discuss how others felt about identifying as fangirls, our communities, the pride and occasional embarrassment we feel, and most of all the passion–the squee.

Although originally conceived as a documentary feature film, the story was far too big and multi-layered to fit into that structure so we had to re-think it as a series of webisodes.

Women have a long history as participants and leaders in fandoms, and I am continually inspired by those women who have paved the way for modern fandom, the unsung heroes who helmed the letter writing campaigns in the early days of Hollywood, who wrote, edited and distributed the ‘zines of the 60’s, 70’s and ’80’s and have now added to fandoms as outspoken voices in fan journalism, fanfiction, podcasting, fanart, social media, and much much more.

This project is a celebration, a history, but most importantly an archive of women’s contribution to fandom & popular culture.

Future episodes of the web series will be released, but it is also up to us fans to help the web series get made. If you like what you see in episode one of the series and are interested in more, consider becoming a Patreon to help with the production costs and allow for more episodes to be released.

The team at Squee! The Fangirl Documentary is on a tour of conventions this year.  Their next appearance will be at New England SuperMegaFest Comic-Con on Saturday, April 8th.

If you are interested in being a part of the series, the filmmakers are still on the look out for fangirls! At press time, they are currently seeking cosplayers in the New York City area for their upcoming episode about cosplay:

As someone who did follow up with Hansi, and later on got to meet with her fellow collaborator and Squee documentary writer Lynn Zuberis (co-writer of Fangasm) a few years ago, I highly recommend taking part in the documentary if you are able to. I had a great time sharing my love of Heroes fandom with Hansi.  I have no idea if any part of my interview will be included in the documentary, but being interviewed for the series (then film) helped me see the tradition that I am a part of as a fangirl.

To keep up with the project, follow them on Facebook Tumblr, and Twitter.
