Mother’s Day 2017: KristaG’s Geeky Gift Ideas for Mom!

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and sometimes it is a little hard to think about what geeky/nerdy gifts to get for our wonderful geek moms! Keeping that in mind, here are a few of my suggestions for 2017:

Herbaceous

One of the most recent additions to Pencil First Games’ titles, Herbaceous was released just this year after a successful 2016 Kickstarter campaign. Playable for 1-4 players, this card game is all about pressing your luck and set collection. Players compete with one another to grow and store herbs in hopes of having the most valuable collection. The game is light weight, quick to play, and already has a 3 card Flavor Pack mini expansion to add a little bit of spice to the game. In my opinion, this is a great game for garden lovers, cooks, herbalists, or just for people who want a relaxing, fun game to play with the whole family! Check back soon for a more in-depth review of Herbaceous designed by Eduardo Baraf, Steve Finn, and Keith Matejka!

Dr. Hooves Pillow

Created by a fellow Geek Girl, these fantastic pillows and dish cloths are great ways to include subtle nods to mom’s favorite fandoms while still having multiple uses! The pillows are made from jersey knit cotton (one of my favorite materials for lounging!) with the designs screen printed on the front. Many of them feature crossover images for multiple fandoms such as Pokemon and Harry Potter or Disney and Doctor Who! The dish cloths, however, are hand crocheted from 100% cotton and perfectly capture the essence of Tom Baker’s 4th Doctor and his iconic scarf. All of these and many other geeky items are available on the Girl Gamer Gear etsy shop!

Lotus

Lotus is a 2-4 player card game that features card-laying and set collection. The game was designed by Jordan and Mandy Goddard and released in 2016 by Renegade Game Studios. In this stunningly beautiful game, players work to grow flowers one petal at a time and try to gain control of them via Guardian symbols (more symbols matching their player color). The game can be played in 20-45 minutes depending on the number of players. Lotus is great for any card game loving mom who is also interested in gardening or a relaxing evening with a game utilizing light strategy and beautiful imagery. Super Mario Ice Cube Tray

There’s a lot to be said about silicone ice cube trays as I tend to use them for far more than just fun shaped frozen water. I’ve made Lego and Lego Mini-Figure Gummies, skull and crossbone truffles, Portal Companion Cube shaped cake pops, Wonder Woman insignia chocolates, and I’ve even used them as jello molds! These adorable Super Mario Bros. World shaped trays are a great addition to any creative or fun loving mom’s kitchen – regardless of if she wants to just use them for ice or if she wants to use them for other fun treats! This item from Paladone features familiar 8-bit shaped character and icon designs such as question blocks, coins, Mario, mushrooms, and, of course, Luigi!

Poke Ball Power Bank

Do some of the moms in your life play Pokemon Go? If so, these portable power banks make great gifts to give her a few extra hours of hunting and gym battling time. Shaped like a poke-ball themselves, they’re a great way to help mom feel more an actual Trainer from the game! These ones from Nerd Notions feature a high-end lanyard, 2 Output ports so multiple items may be charged at once, an included charging cord, and 4 LEDs to indicate the level of charge left in the poke-ball! Also included is a random Pokemon card to add to – or help start – mom’s trading card collection! These are a great gift for any Pokemon lover!

Baby Groot USB Charger

Speaking of power, for all of those Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans out there, ThinkGeek.com has created a USB Car Charger in the shape of baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy! Not only is this dual port charger absolutely adorable, it is sound activated so Groot dances while he charges mom’s phone! Groot can be plugged into the car’s cigarette lighter or power outlet and then be placed perfectly in the cup holder thanks to his flower pot shaped base. Or, if one is so inclined, the baby Groot USB charger can be plugged into a USB port on a wall charger or computer in mom’s office! This would be a great gift to combine with movie tickets to go see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in theatres this weekend!
