RIP Robert Hardy, Harry Potter’s Cornelius Fudge

British actor Robert Hardy, known for his role as Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter movies has died. He was 91.

Born in 1925, he went to Rugby School, Magdelane College, and Oxford University until he was called to serve in the Royal Air Force. He later graduated with a BA in English and studied with both CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien.

His acting career began in 1959 in various roles on stage and on television. He played veterinarian Siegfried Farnon in the television adaptaion of James’ Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small from 1978 to 1990. He played both Winston Churchill and Franklin D Roosevelt, both on multiple occasions.

He won a BAFTA award for his role as Winston Churchill in Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1981.

Apart from acting, he was also a writer. He wrote two books about the longbow: Longbow: A Social and military history and The Great Warbow; From Hastings to the Mary Rose.

He was married twice and had three children. He was living at Denville Hall, a home for retired actors, at the time of his death.
