Captain Phasma #1 Review!

Jedi Jondee here on Starkiller Base,

Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi begins with the Phasma novel by Delilah S. Dawson, Leia, Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray, and the Captain Phasma comic book. The Marvel comic is written by Kelly Thompson who has written Jem and the Holograms for IDW and A-Force for Marvel. The art is by Marco Checchetto who drew the limited series Shattered Empire. His art seems to cover the widescreen SW action and get character moments. The cover by Paul Renaud has Captain Phasma in her armor next to Starkiller Base and Kylo and Rey’s lightsaber fight. Strangely, her scenes with Finn are missing. It picks up right at the end of The Force Awakens. What happened when Captain Phasma was left in the trash compactor? According to this issue, she walked out. Huh? Nothing about how clever she was with devices in her suit to open up the compactor door. No, she walked out. Anti-climatic. The first page shows Captain Phasma recording the end of Starkiller Base. Then, the melted wall of the trash compactor, she destroyed it? attack on the base breached the wall? Dunno, we move on.

The base is being torn apart and stormtroopers tossed by explosions. Captain Phasma gets out with a single hole in her cloak. There there is a double page of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter battle. Captain Phasma reaches a computer console to get the records that she disengaged the shields that led to the attack. She deletes the record and then returns to check the console to see if others accessed the record. Sure, an attack on a base, there is enough time to check records. Captain Phasma finds out that Lt. Sol Rivas has lowered the base’s shields. Um, this was questionable in TFA, but one console shuts down the base’s shields? Now, two consoles?, all undetectable by command? The base is collapsing and Phasma gets a bead on Rivas with her rifle, but the explosions throw off her aim. She’s not effective if she doesn’t know the situation makes blaster fire compromised. An interesting part is Phasma takes out a grapnel to her gauntlet to swing across the exploding base. Captain Phasma sees some stormtroopers who want to evacuate, but she orders them to stand post. This doesn’t make sense because this would just be a useless end of manpower.

Phasma chases Rivas across the snowy fields, nice targeting of the rifle scope, and she notices Kylo Ren’s lightsaber fight. This is the downside of such expanded material. We didn’t see Captain Phasma in her shiny armor in the forest. The base’s ground breaks open in a crevice. Phasma holds on and pulls herself out of the crevice. She continues the hunt, again trying to blast Rivas. Phasma does a super leap down a crevice. Captain Phasma reaches a hangar and brings pilot, TN-3465, to fly a TIE fighter after Rivas. In the fighter, is a BB unit, noticed by Phasma. In an interview, Thompson has said that this is not BB-9E.  Starkiller Base is destroyed and the TIE flies away. So this is Captain Phasma, a character we know, chasing after Lt. Rivas, a character we’ve never seen before and don’t really care about, on a mission while she should be reforming with the rest of the First Order. The base is destroyed, the Resistance is successful, chasing after the responsible person for lowering the shields is of minimal importance. Maybe all questions will be answered with the next issue!
