Riverdale, “Chapter Fourteen: Kiss Before Dying”, Recap!

Jughead Jondee here at Riverdale General Hospital,

Riverdale – “Chapter Fourteen: Kiss Before Dying” – Dean Buscher/The CW.

The closing moments of last season ended in a cliffhanger, Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), Archie’s father was shot! Now, his fate might be answered in season 2’s opener with a title referencing the 1956 thriller about a murdered heiress and the man trying to get her family’s fortune. Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) narrates about the town people of Riverdale going through their morning routines. Archie (KJ Apa) races in his father’s truck to take him to the hospital. His father is taken away and Archie watches from the window saying he is there until Fred loses consciousness. Fred has a vision of his son’s graduation, he was there with his wife, Mary (Molly Ringwald), and Archie’s friends tell him he died ands then he sees the shooter. Mary has left him in Riverdale. The show is dramatic, but really shows the consequences of a shooting. This may be intense for some viewers, but the show handles the situation delicately.

Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) has her mother, Alice Cooper (Madchen Amick) worrying about her and she mentions Jughead has joined the Southside Serpents. She gets Archie’s call. The hotel, Veronica Lodge (Camilla Mendes) is drinking a memos that upsets her mother, Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols), who intended it for her arriving husband. Veronica gets a call from Betty. Jughead gets the call and heads off on his motorcycle. The friends hug Archie who tells them what happened. Jughead calls Archie Pureheart the Powerful. This is a reference to the comic Life with Archie #42 (1965). Pureheart ad his own title ands his friends also got super powers. Alice arrives at the hospital accusing the Southside Serpents of shooting Fred Andrews. Archie calls his mother to tell her to come to the hospital. Sheriff Keller (Martin Cummins) stops by to ask questions of Archie who describes the shooter; he wore a black hood with green eyes. Jughead asks for the school paper if there was another motive besides robbery. Who is the shooter? may be our season long mystery.

Betty talks with Veronica about her discomfort helping grieving people. Archie reveals to Jughead that the Southside Serpents were fired by his father’s construction crew. He is told from the doctor that the bullet is out, but is father is not conscious. Another vision, Archie with a suitcase, but Fred doesn’t want to go. Archie says their dead relatives are waiting. Archie reruns home with Veronica to see his dog, Vegas. They go out to walk the dog. Jughead goes to talk to his fellow Serpents and asks for information on the shooter. Archie showers, Veronica knocks to check in on him, she undresses, and joins him. It’s getting steamy as that shower! Morning, the hospital, Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) goes to Betty to ask about her relationship with Jughead. They see Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) bring in her mother. She says to Kevin and Betty that her mother rushed in an accidental fire that razed Blossom Mansion. We saw at the end of the first season that Cheryl torched the mansion after the death of her father. Cheryl has gone from snobby to off the deep end!

At Archie’s home, Veronica tries to organize Fred’s things. Archie is frustrated over his father’s missing wallet. Veronica refuses to leave, wow! He cries in her arms. Archie gets a call from the sheriff, they head over to the police station to see a line-up. He sees images of the shooter, but the suspects are not the shooter. Veronica joins Jughead and Betty to ask if they will go to Pop’s to find Fred’s wallet. They take Jughead’s motorcycle. Hermione prays and her daughter who suspects her mother is connected to the shooting with her father behind it. Her mother doesn’t like her disrespect and warns her. Archie comes to school getting support from the school’s football team, the Bulldogs, and the popular group, the Pussycats including Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray). Archie is told his after is recovering so offers words of encouragement. Vision, Archie shows his father his wedding ring for Veronica, Pops (Alvin Sanders) says, “Time dies.” He points to the bloody wound on Fred. Betty and Jughead go looking for the wallet, Pops says he hid during the shooting, and tells them the shooter did not take money. He calls the shooter the “Angel of Death.”  The surreal moments separate this show from other teen dramas.

Pops offers them food, a burger (yay!) that Jughead munches on, Betty is worried about his gang. He says he staying at his dad’s trailer to stay close to his father. The hospital, Cheryl tells her mother that the fire was an accident, and threatens her mother. Veronica has brought a wallet for Archie’s father. Jughead has brought burgers for everyone. He confesses that he was paralyzed while the shooter held his gun to Archie’s head. Archie closed his eyes, he says he’s a coward, and remembers the door chime as the shooter left. It’s another mystery and I suspect someone connected to Archie. The killer is not done and he has left Riverdale, but he finds another victim! There’s another vision that is jaw dropping something out of the recent Archie comics that explored alternate possibilities. We also have the recovery of Fred Andrews. Archie makes a desperate vow. Where is Cheryl’s mind? Will Betty stand by her man? How deep is Jughead involved with the gang? What is the plan of Hiriam Lodge (new series star Mark Consuelos)? Will Riverdale ever get back to the quiet town? A number of questions to be explored this season!
